Upgrade steps for Vista SP1 Print E-mail
Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) has been released for a number of weeks now, but how do you ensure the update goes smoothly? SP1 is marked as an invisible update and therefore isn't installed by the auto updater. Therefore the upgrade requires you to trigger the Windows Update Wizard to run. We recommend a number of steps should be performed prior to running the update wizard.

1) Visit the manufacturers website for your desktop/laptop and check that you have the latest drivers and updates for your system. Often these updates are issues during the life of a computer.

2) Whilst at the website, check if they have an specific recommendations for upgrading to Vista SP1 for your system.

3) Visit the Microsoft website and read the Knowledge article 935796 as there are a number of applications that are known to experience loss of functionality with the upgrade.

4) Use the System Restore and create a new restore point before you upgrade. The System Restore Point enables you to go back to a previous version of the computer's operating system.

5) Empty your Recycle bin, remove temporary internet files.

6) Defragment your hard disk to ensure the system is fully optimised.

7) Ensure the following updates are installed prior to SP1:
Bitlocker update (Enterprise and Ultimate only)
Service Stack Update
Reliability update

8) Finially visit the Windows update site and perform the check for updates.

As you will observe, upgrading is not always as straight forward as you think...
